On Translation: The Games

Antoni Muntadas is a pioneering artist whose work critiques the global media landscape and the systems of information, power, and representation that lie beneath it. Utilizing installations, photography, video, interventions, and other media, he exposes the social and political mechanisms that pervade contemporary communications. As part of an ongoing series that explores issues of transcription, interpretation, and translation, On Translation: The Games explores the exchange of national values and symbols exemplified by the modern Olympics. Commissioned to coincide with their 1996 centennial anniversary in Atlanta, the project continues the artist’s critical analysis of translation as a metaphor for a world in which communication is filtered by social, political, cultural, and economic forces.
